On a recent visit to The School of Textiles in Coggeshall, we were lucky enough to receive an informal presentation from internationally respected textile historian, author and archivist; Mary Schoeser. Having worked and collaborated with many different well-know textile organisations, museums and archives, Mary really is a font of knowledge regarding all things textiles. She had so much wisdom and useful information to impart to us, including the importance of visiting archives for inspiration, as seeing designs in person and up-close is completely different to viewing things on the internet. There was only a small group of us visiting, and this meant that Mary was able to show and talk us through some of the beautiful books she has published. ‘Textiles: The Art of Mankind’, I found particularly interesting, as it was such a heavy and detailed compilation of textiles throughout history, full of gorgeous imagery. Mary mentioned that The School of Textiles currently hold workshops throughout the year, and plan to hold frequent open access sessions in which visitors can look through the libraries. I will definitely be keeping an eye on the School’s events, as they could possibly be a useful source of information/research in the future.
