“The vulgar is something we make. Nothing is naturally vulgar. Vulgarity, like beauty, is in the eye of the beholder.” – Adam Phillips

Although photography was not prohibited on our recent trip the ‘The Vulgar: Fashion Re-defined, I gathered these images of some of the exciting outfits and garments that can be seen in the exhibition. It was really interesting to see so many different well-known fashion icons and personality’s opinions on what the meaning of ‘vulgar’ really is.

Some interesting points from the exhibition and interviews that I picked up on:

“Vulgar is just a point of view”

“Vulgar = Of the people”

“Vulgar is confrontational, unlike typical english culture/etiquette”

“Fine line between shocking/vulgar/experimental”

“For some reason, deemed as negative”

“Vulgar reveals what is normally hidden”
